Mechouia Salad: Tunisia on a Plate

🗓 05.12.25

If you could capture the essence of a Tunisian summer in a single dish, it would be “Slata Mechouia”.

Smoky roasted peppers, juicy tomatoes, and a drizzle of golden olive oil  Salade Mechouia is Tunisia’s answer to bold, fresh flavors. Simple, authentic, and unforgettable, this salad brings a taste of home to every bite.

INGREDIENTS

Green Peppers: 4–5 large peppers (sweet or mild).

Hot Peppers: 2–3 green chili peppers (adjust according to your spice tolerance).

Tomatoes: 4 ripe, firm tomatoes.

Onion: 1 medium red or white onion.

Garlic: 3–4 cloves (grilled in their skins).

Toppings: canned tuna in olive oil, drained and flaked,  2 hard-boiled eggs, quartered, and a handful of black or green olives.

PREPARATION

Grill peppers, tomatoes, onion, and garlic over charcoal (or under a broiler) until the skins are blackened all over

Let the vegetables cool slightly. Peel the skins off peppers and tomatoes. Finely chop or crush them with a fork.

Place the chopped vegetables in a bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt.  Mix well to combine all the flavors.

Optional toppings:                                                                                                                                          Add tuna, boiled eggs, or olives for extra taste and texture.

Why OLYFO Makes It Better?

Slata Mechouia is technically a simple dish, which means there is nowhere for poor ingredients to hide. The robust polyphenols in our Chetoui variety cut through the richness of the egg and tuna, while harmonizing with the spicy heat of the peppers. It doesn’t just dress the salad; it completes it.
